We're trying something a little different this week, and it's a bit tongue in cheek but it touches on a real social problem.
The health and wellness industry has been beset by conspiracy theories that are largely used to sell products of dubious effectiveness. There are supposed to be numerous guard rails and social institutions protecting us, but our confidence in them has eroded substantially over my lifetime. Pharmaceutical companies are a particular bête noire in these conspiracy theories, and for good reason; it's hard to find an industry more morally bankrupt than the pharmaceutical industry. Unfortunately, the supplements industry sees the rot at the core of the pharmaceutical industry and said "challenge accepted."
This isn't to say all supplements are ineffective, but rather, that we need to apply a healthy degree of skepticism to anyone in the health and wellness industry.
I hope you enjoy the video, here is the script:
Mark: God, it’s terrible, so many children are being diagnosed with Autism and nobody knows why.
Swindler: Hey, I overheard you talking about autism. You know what else is terrible? Pharmaceutical companies.
Mark: They are pretty evil. There was that bond villain guy who raised the price of that drug by like 5000%
Swindler: Remember those evil pharmaceutical companies we were just talking about?
Swindler: They’re poisoning those kids, using vaccines
Mark: I mean they are pretty evil
Swindler: And the government knows about it. The FDA, the CDC, the CIA, the SEC the FTC, the USDA. the BBB, well maybe not the BBB, but maybe them. All those alphabet agencies are behind it
Mark: Those government agencies are pretty corrupt. There is a lot of coziness between regulators and the industries they’re supposed to regulate. But why would they want to poison kids?
Swindler: Follow the money. Think about it! All those kids now need lots of drugs, drugs those pharmaceutical companies get to sell to them. And those drugs will give ‘em side effects, which will be treated with other drugs.
Mark: That makes a certain kind of sense
Swindler: And the government gets to control you. If you’ve got a kid who needs lots of expensive drugs, you aren’t going to rock the boat, you’re gonna stay in your lane, you’re gonna be quiet, you’re gonna be plient.
Mark: Ok . . .
Swindler: So this is the thing, I’ve got something they don’t want you to know about.
Mark: Go on.
Swindler: I’ve got this secret knowledge, see, this way to keep you and your family healthy?
Mark: I want me and my family to be healthy.
Swindler: Yeah, see, it’s this pill . . .
Mark: Pill?! That sounds like a drug.
Swindler: No no no no no, this isn’t a drug, it’s a supplement. It’s all natural, it’s healthy, it’ll help you live longer, make you smarter, and if you take it, your kids will be healthier, no autism.
Mark: I’m listening
Swindler: It’s only 100 dollars a month per person.
Mark: That sounds like a lot of money
Swindler: How much do drugs cost? Thousands of dollars a month, that’s why they don’t want you to know about it, it’s gonna cost them billions.
Mark: That tracks
Swindler: 100 dollars a month is nothing compared to that. 100 dollars a month to keep yourself healthy? That’s less than your health insurance
Mark: That is less than my health insurance!
Swindler: And I’ll sweeten the deal for you, if you agree to buy a year’s supply, I’ll drop the price to 90 dollars a month
Mark: That is a good deal! Where do I sign?
