FAQs-Mei Zen Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

What is Mei Zen Facial, Abdominal and Neck Rejuvenation Acupuncture and how does it work?
Cosmetic acupuncture is the shallow insertion of very fine, sterile needles, placed to stimulate the collagen matrix. By stimulating specific points on the face, abdomen, or neck, the procedure increases circulation and encourages collagen production. This allows you to achieve radiant skin whether you are looking for firmer skin or relief from acne and rosacea. What really separates Mei Zen from similar treatments is that each appointment starts with a conventional acupuncture treatment to help resolve any internal issues that are preventing you from being your most radiant self.

Are there any contraindications?
Yes, smokers need to stop smoking prior to the starting the protocol. Smoking does considerable damage to the skin. If you are a former smoker, congratulations, the protocol can help repair the damage from your one-time habit. Women who are pregnant or in treatment for fertility issues should wait until their child is born.

How long will it take before I see results?
It depends on the patient’s health and overall well-being. This procedure targets the dermis, which takes approximately one month to affect the epidermis (the outer most layer of skin, which is visible). However, because we are also treating any underlying health concerns, patients often experience substantive improvements to their life much sooner than a month.

How long will the results last?
Mostly it depends on your age. Patients in their 20s or 30s generally can go three to five years without needing another full ten-session protocol. Patients in their 40s tend to require another round of treatment every 18-24 months, and patients over the age of 50 tend to require the protocol once a year. To maintain results, periodic follow-up appointments are recommended.

What is the time commitment?
We will begin with a 30-minute free consultation to go over your desired goals, overall health and determine whether this is the right procedure for you. The basic Mei Zen Protocol is performed over ten appointments, done twice a week. The time commitment for each treatment is 60 to 75 minutes. Patients with particularly damaged skin may require additional appointments to achieve the results they are looking for.

How much does this procedure cost?
The ten-appointment protocol for the face or neck costs $1,270. Follow up appointments are $127 per appointment. Periodic maintenance appointments are recommended to ensure your results last. We also offer AcuSculpt and cosmetic rejuvenation packages to maximize the value and results you receive.

What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that easily rolls up past your knees and elbows. While the primary focus is on your face and neck, we do use treatment points on the body as well.

What do I need to prepare?
Ideally, please come to your appointment without makeup. If you prefer, we offer a washroom where you can remove any makeup before your appointment. You are also more than welcome to reapply makeup after your appointment.

We also suggest not drinking alcohol in excess. Alcohol contains a lot of sugar, which can cause the skin to sag. We encourage you to only drink moderately if you want to truly realize the results this procedure provides.

What aftercare is needed?
Over the course of the ten-appointment protocol, we will discuss your recommended skin care regimen following the procedure, any modifications you need to make to your current routine and review dietary recommendations. Depending on what you are looking to achieve, the best way to maintain your new, healthy look is to schedule monthly or quarterly maintenance appointments.

Can I do this in conjunction with Botox?
Immediately after Botox, the answer is no for the facial protocol. For the neck protocol, you can get this with Botox but there is a small risk of adverse interaction that while not dangerous may change the expected result. Compare Botox and cosmetic rejuvenation acupuncture at our blog here.

Does this procedure hurt?
With neck and facial rejuvenation acupuncture, you may experience mild discomfort. However, it hurts substantially less than alternative procedures, which require Lidocaine to numb tissues in a specific area.

Is this procedure safe?
Yes, this is a minimally-invasive, safe, and natural procedure.
